QPR co-owner Amit Bhatia apologised to fans for the tough season they’ve had to endure, as he praised Marti Cifuentes for the brilliant work he has done as they preserved their Championship status.

QPR hammer Leeds United 4-0 to stay in Championship

The job the Spaniard has done since he was named as Gareth Ainsworth’s successor has been nothing short of remarkable, with Cifuentes inheriting a side that were six points from safety, and a club and fan base that were divided.

However, a good run of form meant they went into last night’s game at home to Leeds knowing that a win would mathematically guarantee their safety.

And, they got the three points in style, with Cifuentes’ men producing a superb team display to hammer the promotion hopefuls by four goals at Loftus Road.

Ilias Chair put the R’s deservedly ahead early on, before Lucas Andersen got his first goal for the club with a classy finish.

The Londoners did have to deal with some Leeds pressure after that, but they then wrestled back control of the game, and Lyndon Dykes headed home to make it three, and Sam Field capped it all off with a late effort, sparking wild celebrations around the ground.

The players and staff did a lap of honour following the final whistle, with Cifuentes rightly lauded for his achievements, as he builds a real connection with the supporters.

It’s been a tough few years for QPR as they’ve battled for results, and Bhatia acknowledged that with an honest social media post that also outlined reasons for hope moving forward.

Incredibly emotional with the result tonight to end the season. I’m so sorry for all the heartache we’ve all been through this season, hopefully in time all that’s left is a memory we’ll talk about with a smile knowing what we lived through. Congratulations to all our players and everyone at the club, and thank you to all our fans who put us on their backs and carried us to safety. In Marti we trust!”

Marti Cifuentes can bring the good times back to QPR

Firstly, you have to say that is a great message from a co-owner, as they aren’t always so honest and open with fans on social media.

Yes, some big mistakes have been made over the years, with the appointments of Neil Critchley and then Ainsworth ones that didn’t work out.

However, they’ve certainly found the right man in Cifuentes, and he deserves huge credit for the work he has done since he came to England.

He has created a strong, resilient side, and they produced their best performance under him against a Leeds side that could be playing in the Premier League next season. It was a great team display, and the players delivered what the boss wanted tactically.

Since Cifuentes’ appointment, QPR have been a top-half side, and if he can receive some decent backing in the summer window, then the fans will be dreaming about what could be possible under the former Hammarby chief next season.
