Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim recently made some interesting comments after his side lost 2-0 to West Ham United at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese tactician alluded to Man United finding a new manager to replace him if he cannot turn things around.
Amorim has endured a miserable start to life in the Premier League, winning only six of his first 25 games in charge (D6, L13).
However, Amorim backtracked on those comments today, insisting he is the man for the United job.
“What I’m saying is that since I arrived, I’m talking about the standards,” the 40-year-old said (via The Athletic).
“I can’t see the team having these results and say nothing. I have a clear idea of what to do, I have an understanding of the problem, and I’m far from quitting.”
If Amorim believes he is the right man for the job, the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur at San Mames is a chance to prove it.
Anything less than a win against a weakened Spurs side, and fans will have every right to demand change.
And even if he clings to his post through the summer, the pressure will be suffocating from day one next season.
At Man United, results are the only currency. Right now, Amorim is running on fumes.
With Man Utd sitting closer to the relegation zone than the champions in the Premier League table, Amorim will likely be resting his troops for the clash with Chelsea on Friday.
The former Sporting CP boss will need all hands on deck as they look to secure Champions League football next season.
Europa League qualification might save Amorim on paper, but it is far from the level this club should aim for.
His abysmal league record would put a manager on the chopping block at any other club.
