The Tigers have just endured a frustrating end to the season, as they missed out on a play-off place on the final day, and Liam Rosenior paid the price for that, as he was surprisingly sacked earlier this month.

So, it’s a summer of change for Hull, and the immediate priority for Acun Ilicali is to bring in a new manager.

However, the recruitment team will be working on ways to improve the squad, and it’s expected to be a busy summer for Hull as many of the squad this season were on loan.

Among those, Fabio Carvalho joined from Liverpool in January, and Tyler Morton spent the whole season with Hull from the Anfield side.

And, it appears the Championship side are looking to benefit from the relationship they have built once more, as journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that McConnell could be moving to the Tigers.

The 19-year-old midfielder is highly-rated at Anfield, having joined the club from Sunderland at U15 level, and this season has been a positive one for the player as he has made his debut.

His first outing in a Liverpool shirt came in a 5-1 victory over Toulouse in the Europa League, but McConnell went on to make 11 appearances in total, including three in the league.

But, his most notable appearance undoubtedly came in the League Cup final win over Chelsea back in February.

Due to a huge number of injuries, Jürgen Klopp had to rely on several youngsters, and McConnell came on as a late sub, and he then helped the Reds gain control in extra time as they ultimately won the cup thanks to a Virgil van Dijk goal.

That would have been a great day for McConnell, but he will know that he realistically needs to go out on loan if he is to get more game time moving forward.

James McConnell has qualities that Hull City need

Morton is going to be sorely missed by Hull because he has been a key player this season, and he brings a lot to the team with his intensity and quality on the ball.

Whilst McConnell is a different player, he does have similar qualities, and he would operate in front of the back four, with his game about keeping the ball and winning it back.

Of course, there are areas of his game that he needs to improve, but that’s the case with any young player, and playing week in, week out would allow him to work on those aspects.

Hull City’s reputation among the Premier League elite

Premier League clubs will think long and hard before sending a player out on loan, as they need to know their youngsters are heading to the right environment.

Under Rosenior, Hull were the perfect place in the eyes of many, which is why they managed to sign the likes of Morton, Carvalho and Liam Delap, among others.

It remains to be seen whether Rosenior’s exit impacts Hull’s reputation, but it’s crucial they do all they can to maintain a good relationship with top clubs, as there is a lot of quality available for loan moves.
