Huddersfield Town need new strikers, but may need to get rid of some of their mis-firing attackers from last season in order to accommodate this.
Huddersfield Town had a difficult 2024-25 season in front of goal, but if they're to remedy this for the new season, they may have to have a clearout first.
Huddersfield endured a difficult end to the 2024-25 season, falling away from the play-off positions in League One and ending up in 10th place in the table.
Goal-scoring was an issue for the Terriers last season, but if they're going to improve that, there are changes that they'll need to make. But the change that Huddersfield reportedly want to make won't be a cheap one, so the club may need to try to move on some of those who couldn't deliver during 2024-25.
Huddersfield have been reported to be in the race for Nathan Lowe, who impressed on loan at Walsall last season during a half-season loan from Stoke City. Lowe scored 15 in 22 games for the Saddlers and ended the season as League Two's Young Player of the Season.
But with the reported price for Lowe being in the region of £2.5 million, it may be necessary to have a bit of a clear-out of the players that they already have.
One has already left. Josh Koroma was the only Huddersfield player to reach double-figures in front of goal last season, with 11 goals in 37 games, but his contract expired at the end of June, and he has left the club.
The Terriers' other attacking options don't look particularly appealing ahead of the new season. Freddie Ladapo joined from Ipswich in the summer 2024 transfer window. He couldn't manage a single goal in the League for Huddersfield last season.
Bojan Radulovic has been a flop. He could only manage one goal in 17 matches before being sent out on loan to the Dutch club Fortuna Sittard for the second of the season, and he could only manage one goal in ten games for them.
Rhys Healey's return for them last season was little better, with one goal in nine League appearances, but that low number of appearances is a reflection of the extent to which he's been struggling with injuries.
The 58 League goals that Huddersfield managed in their 46 League matches last season was the lowest in the top half of the League One table, and the biggest single reason why they were unable to successfully challenge for a place in the play-offs. Dion Charles and Joe Taylor remain with the club, but will both need competition.
Ladapo has a year to run on his contract, while Radulovic has two years to run on his and Healey has a year to run on his. Moving on the forwards who haven't been scoring might not be easy, though the loan market might be an option for them.
Nathan Lowe might well turn out to be the answer to Huddersfield's prayers, but they may have work to do on their own squad in order to secure him. That clearout has to come first.
