Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has admitted that he does not know whether Alexander Isak will be returning to training.
The 25-year-old has not featured in any of Newcastle’s pre-season games and did not travel with the team to Asia for their pre-season tour.
The forward instead travelled to Spain, where he underwent his own individual training regime.
After finishing their pre-season tour, Newcastle will now return home but their manager is unsure whether Isak will be joining them in training, having expressed his desire to leave this summer.
“Of course, I’d like him to, but I don’t know at the moment,” Howe explained. “Other people have been dealing with the situation back home.”
Last week, Newcastle rejected a bid from Premier League champions Liverpool for the Swedish international.
They are also looking to strengthen their frontline by targeting RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. They face competition from Manchester United for the Slovenian but remain hopeful that they can land him.
Newcastle drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur in South Korea in a game which is expected to be Heung-min Son’s final appearance for Spurs. Newcastle’s staff and players joined in applause as the South Korean bid farewell to supporters.
Howe said: “The reaction was instinctive from my players. I think that speaks volumes about him. It’s not just the talent he has but the way he has carried himself over the years.
“I think he’s seen as one of the game’s great Premier League players. I’ve never had the pleasure of working with him or meeting him and talking to him but I’m sure he would be the same as he is on the pitch.”
