Sheffield United may look to part ways with forgotten man Ivo Grbic, with the club set to not stand in the way of reported foreign interest in the 29-year-old shot-stopper.
According to the Sheffield Star, Grbic may be set for a move back to La Liga, a year and a half since he arrived at Bramall Lane from Spanish powerhouses Atlético Madrid, with Celta Vigo one of the sides previously linked with the Croat.
Gbric endured a tough yet brief time in South Yorkshire, which saw him concede 32 goals in just 11 games. This past season, he was loaned out to Turkish side Rizespor, helping them to a modest ninth-place finish in the Turkish Süper Lig.
And, as Chris Wilder was content with him leaving the club last season on loan, it is likely that he will not stand in the way of a permanent departure if an offer is to be made during the ongoing transfer window.
Per the report from the Sheffield Star, Ivo Grbic is looking for a settled future after a year and a half of uncertainty following his mid-season move to Bramall Lane in January 2024.
After Wes Foderingham conceded 63 goals in the opening 21 Premier League games during the 2023/24 campaign, Grbic was brought in for an undisclosed fee from Atlético Madrid to provide some much-needed competition. However, he struggled to adapt to English football.
He was thrown into the deep end, lining up in goal for a side that conceded a whopping 104 goals across the course of the season, but after conceding 25 in nine league games, and even being dropped for Foderingham for the rest of the season, meant that the writing was on the wall for the Croat at Sheffield United.
The signing of Michael Cooper allowed Grbic to leave on loan to Rizespor and, despite conceding five on his debut against Galatasaray, he conceded just 26 in his remaining 21 league games, keeping four clean sheets along the way, and is now the subject of interest back in Spain.
The Sheffield Star reports that Celta Vigo had interest as they looked to replace the retiring Vicente Guaita, but they've recently secured the services of Romanian shot-stopper Ionut Radu. Nevertheless, interest being there could indicate that more is to come, and the Blades will certainly not stand in his way if interest in Grbic resurfaces between now and the start of September.
Ivo Grbic needs to move away from Sheffield United to settle somewhere else and try and regain his form.
Four seasons ago, Grbic was a Champions League regular whilst playing for French side Lille, and in the 2022/23 campaign was trusted by Diego Simeone to man the posts for his Atletico Madrid side 12 times in La Liga.
His performances had him backing up Dominik Livakovic in Croatia's 2022 World Cup squad, as they finished third in Qatar, too.
Grbic would likely be hoping he can move on swiftly and put his time at Bramall Lane behind him. Arguably, so would plenty of Sheffield United fans.
And, banking a bit of cash for a goalkeeper whose time at Bramall Lane was anything but a success would be a good start for a club looking to improve yet again ahead of another season challenging at the top end of the Championship.
