Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 1-0 triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium on Saturday.

The Gunners dominated proceedings in the opening half but went into the break with a significant disadvantage after a dreadful refereeing decision.

Myles Lewis-Skelly’s tactical foul outside the Wolves box was deemed as serious foul play by referee Michael Oliver. He was sent off as VAR backed Oliver’s decision.

Arsenal came out with better intent with 10 men after the interval. The playing field was levelled with Joao Gomes being sent off for a second yellow card in the 70th minute.

Riccardo Calafiori came up with a fine goal soon after to seal the victory for the Gunners.

Speaking after the game, Alan Shearer said that the referee got the decision wrong and questioned how VAR Darren England did not send him to the screen.

He added that it was one of the worst decisions he had seen in a long time.

Shearer said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “As a referee you can get it wrong on the pitch, you might see something which is incorrect.

“How on earth Darren England, the VAR, thinks that the referee has got that right and there is no need to send him to the screen.

“One of the worst decisions that I’ve seen in a long time. I just cannot see and work out what VAR is thinking going along with Michael Oliver’s decision.

“No wonder it gets criticised by so many people.”

Arsenal have been the subject of controversial red card decisions. They picked up a fourth red card of the season at Wolves but responded brilliantly.

Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri came on the cusp of scoring for Wolves, but goalkeeper David Raya was superb in goal with two exceptional saves.

Meanwhile, the Gunners fared well as an attacking force in the second half with 10 men for 25 minutes. They should have scored through Kai Havertz.

Havertz had another difficult outing. He was guilty of squandering three clear-cut chances.

Despite this, Arsenal sealed a 1-0 win to keep their slender hopes of winning the league alive.
