Millwall have signed Josh Coburn from Middlesbrough in a club record deal.
Millwall have announced the return of Josh Coburn to the club on a permanent basis, after a transfer agreement was struck with Middlesbrough.
The striker spent the previous campaign on loan at The Den, making 20 appearances in the league and scoring five goals.
Despite the relatively low goal return, Coburn impressed, particularly after he returned from a broken metatarsal during the run-in, as he made himself a key player for Alex Neil alongside Mihailo Ivanovic up top, as the side fell short in their bid to reach the top six.
Therefore, the Lions have moved quickly to bring the 22-year-old back to the club, as they announced his return on social media on Thursday afternoon.
And, further details have been shared about the transfer, as The Mirror revealed that Millwall have agreed an eye-watering deal worth up to £5m for Coburn.
Whilst it’s unclear what the initial fee is, the report explains how it could reach that figure if add-ons are hit further down the line, which would make him the most expensive signing in Millwall’s history.
This is an exciting deal for Millwall, and the club deserve credit for showing huge support to Neil by bringing Coburn back.
Some will say that it’s a significant sum for a player who is relatively unproven at this level, but it’s a long-term investment by the Londoners.
Of course, Coburn isn’t just about goals either. He is a real physical presence, which makes him a nuisance to defend against, and he has a good ability to lead the line and to bring his teammates into play.
When you consider his age, and the fact he has all those raw qualities, this could look like a shrewd deal if Coburn goes on to fulfil the potential that figures at Millwall clearly think he has.
It also shows that Millwall are serious going into the new season, and Neil will be hoping to build a team that can challenge for a play-off place.
Coburn is going to be key to that, and the prospect of him pairing up with Ivanovic in the years to come is one that will excite all connected to Millwall, and it’s a great opportunity for the striker to show what he can do on a consistent basis after struggling for game time at Middlesbrough.
