This follows the news that the 25-year-old has been called up to the Three Lions' senior squad for the first time in his career, clearly impressing Thomas Tuchel with his early-season form in North London under the newly-appointed Thomas Frank.

Indeed, Spence is the latest player in a long line of established names to have made their international mark under the German and his predecessor, Gareth Southgate, following spells in the EFL which have subsequently aided their long-term development.

As well as the call-up enabling Spence to further showcase his talent in the matches at Villa Park next Saturday and the Rajko Mitic Stadium on September 10th, Rob Edwards' side, who are just one of two Championship outfits to accumulate maximum points, are to be given further room to manouvre in a financial sense thanks to the insertion of a bonus clause in the initial transfer deal with Tottenham three summers ago.

Spence's time at the Riverside Stadium was an extremely intriguing period, with the full-back progressing into the first-team fold over time joining after his release from Fulham's academy in the summer of 2018.

The London-born defender made 70 appearances for Middlesbrough and was sent out on loan to Nottingham Forest in 2021/22, where an impressive campaign under Steve Cooper - in which the East Midlands side ended their Premier League exile - caught the eye of many Premier League sides, with Tottenham parting with a £19m fee to take him from the North East to North London.

Spence has made just 44 appearances for his current employers since, with a disastrous loan at then-Championship Leeds United in the first half of the 23/24 season sandwiched between further temporary stints with Stade Rennais and Genoa respectively.

Spence was able to establish himself as an important member of Spurs' squad last season though, as he made 35 total appearances for them, with 25 of those coming in the Premier League.

And after an impressive start to the current campaign, which saw Spurs take maximum points with a 3-0 home success over newly-promoted Burnley and a surprise 2-0 victory against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last weekend, Middlesbrough will once again be grateful to the form of their former defender, even though supporters never saw such strong performance levels at the Riverside.

At the time of his departure, it was reported by ESPN that, after an initial £12.5m upfront fee for Spence was paid, the remaining £6.5m related to performance-related add-ons and a £2.5m bonus should the former Under-21 international feature for the Three Lions at senior level - a feat which was achieved after Tuchel's squad announcement at 12PM on Friday.

As previously mentioned, Spence wasn't able to justify the current and previous hype he has received during his time at the Riverside Stadium, which led to interesting comments from former Boro boss, Neil Warnock, regarding the trajectory his career could take.

The charismatic manager said of Spence: "There are not many players where you can say it's all up to them personally how far they go - it's what's between the ears.

"He could be playing at a top club in England or in non-league in five years, I don't know."

Spence will be glad to have proven Warnock wrong on yet another occasion, and the Middlesbrough hierarchy will be rather pleased with the additional funds coming their way, which could further aid the club's hopes of a Premier League return for the first time since 2016/17 after such a strong start.

It may not be the only significant sum of money coming the club's way, with Football League World exclusively revealing that Wolverhampton Wanderers have submitted a £20m, plus £10m in potential add-ons, for the services of in-demand midfielder, Hayden Hackney, in what would be a club-record departure.
