The reality of not winning promotion to the top flight will truly hit home for Frank Lampard's side in just over a couple of weeks once their season gets underway against Hull City at the CBS Arena.

There is one reality that will have already hit them. Any side who falls just short of promotion knows that they will be susceptible to losing their best players that next summer, and Coventry are no different.

van Ewijk is one of the Sky Blues' talents that has attracted intrigue this offseason. The Dutch right-back proved across the 2024/25 campaign, aside from one major slip up against Sunderland in the first leg of their play-off semi-final contest, that he could be a star in the making.

Coventry name Milan van Ewijk's price

Like any of their other prized assets, Coventry will not be letting the 24-year-old go easily. According to MailSport, they have set an asking price of around £15 million for van Ewijk.

City haven't had to bat off any bids from keen clubs yet, but there are plenty of them around. MailSport have said that top flight outfits Burnley, Everton and Wolves like the Dutchman, although the Clarets' captivation with the Coventry defender has been disputed by local publication the Burnley Express. Fulham are also said to hold an interest in van Ewijk, as per Sky Sports.

Regard for him also spans across Europe and into other continents. Besiktas, Bologna, Eintracht Frankfurt and Brazilian side Flamengo have all been linked with the Coventry defender, too, by the national outlet.

Of last season's play-off teams that weren't named Sunderland, the Sky Blues have done the best job, so far, of keeping their top assets, both on the pitch and in the dugout.

If they were to lose van Ewijk, they already have a ready-made replacement in Kaine Kesler-Hayden. They paid a reported £3.5 million for the Aston Villa right-back earlier in the summer. He was named Preston North End's Young Player of the Season and Player of the Season awards last term while on loan at Deepdale.

Coventry have a tough Milan van Ewijk decision coming their way

The Dutchman's contract situation gives Coventry a bit of strength in negotiations in case any bid does come in for him. His deal expires in the summer of 2027, putting them under no pressure to sell him any time soon. At the same time, Lampard is going to have a tough time managing the minutes of their two top right-sided defenders.

If nothing else, Kesler-Hayden provides great cover, or vice versa, but his signing certainly poses the question of just how willing would City be to move on from van Ewijk this summer?

It's a lot of money to spend on a back-up, and, at the same time, a lot of money to value your back-up at, if the Dutchman becomes the second choice. If that happens, City will surely look to cash in before his value drops drastically.
