After a nightmare summer of off-field issues that has plunged the club into crisis, it has been a tough start to the season for Wednesday, and they are still searching for their first points of the campaign.

The Owls put in a spirited performance in their 2-1 defeat against newly-relegated Leicester City on the opening weekend, and a youthful side progressed to the second round of the EFL Cup after a penalty shoot-out victory over League One side Bolton Wanderers after a 3-3 draw in normal time last Wednesday night.

However, the reality of Wednesday's situation was laid bare as they fell to a 3-0 defeat to Stoke City at Hillsborough on Saturday, with a double from Million Manhoef either side of Divin Mubama's strike sealing a comfortable victory for the Potters.

It does not get much easier for the troubled Owls as they travel to North Wales to take on Championship newcomers Wrexham this weekend, but Phil Parkinson's men have also had an underwhelming start to the new season - albeit with a difficult opening schedule.

Despite their off-field turmoil, the passion of Wednesday supporters has remained as strong as ever in the early stages of the season, and they took over 3,000 to the King Power Stadium for their opening game against Leicester.

On that occasion, Owls supporters did not take to their seats until the fifth minute in protest against Chansiri, and with Wrexham having a global audience due to owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, they may look to stage further demonstrations on Saturday as they continue to bring attention to the plight of their club.

Wednesday had an attendance of 21,683 for the defeat to Stoke at Hillsborough on Saturday, and while that was significantly down on their opening home fixture of last season, it was still the fourth-highest attendance in the Championship over the weekend.

As the Owls prepare to travel to Wrexham for the first time since 2004, they will be backed by another bumper following, with the club confirming on Monday that they have sold out their entire allocation of 1,293 tickets.

Given that they have a squad of just 15 senior players after a mass exodus over the summer, which has been reduced to 14 following a long-term injury to Nathaniel Chalobah, Wednesday's poor start to the season is not unexpected.

However, with the prospect of a points deduction looming after failing to pay the wages of players on time for four of the last five months, the Owls know they need to get their season up and running quickly if they are to have anty chance of avoiding relegation.

Wednesday have been linked with a number of players in recent days as manager Henrik Pedersen looks to bolster his threadbare squad, including the likes of Liam Cooper, Harry Amass, Stuart Armstrong and Onel Hernandez, but the Owls will not be given the green light to make signings until owner Dejphon Chansiri can satisfy the EFL that he can pay the salaries of any new additions.

While the Owls' struggles were forecasted by many, Wrexham's disappointing start to life back in the Championship has come as a surprise, particularly after an eye-catching summer of transfer business that saw them splash out around £3 million on midfielder Lewis O'Brien before smashing their transfer record to sign winger Nathan Broadhead in a deal that could eventually be worth £10 million.

The Red Dragons conceded two late goals as they lost 2-1 at Southampton in their opening game, and despite another valiant effort, they were beaten 3-2 by West Bromwich Albion in their first home fixture at the SToK Cae Ras on Saturday, meaning they will also be desperate to get some points on the board this weekend.
