The former Blues loanee is an option that they have been considering for a while this summer.

Chris Davies has refused to rule out the possibility of Birmingham City revisiting a deal for Rangers centre-back Ben Davies.

Blues' current crop of centre-halves is among the best in the Championship, and they were in League One last season.

Christoph Klarer and new addition Eiran Cashin are expected to be the middle pairing of Davies' backline come the start of the season, with fellow summer signing Phil Neumann unlikely to be fully fit for the start of the upcoming campaign. Birmingham also have Krystian Bielik to fall back on if they pick up injuries in this area of the pitch.

Despite their incredible depth in this position, the chances of them delving into the centre-back market again are not completely unlikely.

Birmingham still open to Ben Davies return deal

Davies, 29, who spent last term at St Andrew's, has been an option for them throughout the summer. Birmingham Live reported that talks were held between City and his parent club, Rangers, over a potential deal for the former Liverpool player.

He hasn't featured in any pre-season matches so far under new boss Russell Martin, but there is yet to be any movement on this front. That same report also detailed that Blues still hold an interest in Kieron Dowell, another Rangers loanee from last season, but, according to Birmingham Live, they would rather bring Davies back.

Cashin's arrival on loan from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion seemingly ruled out a return deal for the 29-year-old, but not so according to the Blues' boss.

"No, not necessarily," said Davies on the Irishman's arrival lessening the chances of Birmingham signing the Rangers man, via Birmingham Live.

"At the moment we have got four centre-backs which is what we want. If nothing changes, then we are where we are, but you just don’t know how things are going to develop in the next few weeks."

Birmingham don't need to bring Ben Davies back, it'd just be greedy

Having depth, and strong depth at that, is always a bonus. Any team with the ambition that City have needs a sufficient amount and standard of players to ensure that their hopes of back-to-back promotions are well and truly alive.

This, though, bringing back Davies, would feel a bit like overkill.

While there is some doubt around Bielik's future, given the amount of players in his position that Birmingham have gone after this summer, there has been no direct indication that the Polish international is on the chopping block.

He is a proven operator in the Championship, who, if he's fine to perform this role, would be more than capable of acting as a back-up option. Without some signs that the 27-year-old could be moving on from St Andrew's this summer, it'd feel a bit stupid to overstock an area of the squad that seems to be well taken care of already.
