Kristjan Asllani is about to make his second Serie A start for Inter Milan this season against out-of-form Empoli tomorrow.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, as reported by FCInterNews, the Albania international is the leading candidate to replace the injured Hakan Calhanoglu at Stadio Carlo Castellani.
Asllani has been on the fringes of the squad since picking up a minor muscle injury while on international duty with Sylvinho’s side.
Indeed, Inter boss Simone Inzaghi couldn’t call upon the 23-year-old’s services against Young Boys and Juventus.
However, he was on the bench during a breathtaking 4-4 Derby d’Italia draw at the weekend.
Despite being an unused substitute, Asllani is ready to prove his worth to Inzaghi in the first midweek round of the 2024/25 season.
His first league start since a 1-1 stalemate at Monza in mid-September could come at the expense of Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Inzaghi replaced Calhanoglu with Piotr Zielinski against Juventus.
And it was a resounding success as the Polish ace bagged two first-half penalties in his maiden top-flight start for Inter.
Though Mkhitaryan impressed against the Bianconeri and scored a delightful goal, he’ll move to the bench on Wednesday.
Indeed, Asllani will likely team up with Nicolo Barella and Davide Frattesi in the engine room.
While the latter failed to live up to expectations against Juventus, the latter couldn’t make a difference off the bench.
But Inzaghi considers playing both Italian stars from the first minute in Tuscany.
After dropping two valuable points against the Turin giants, Inter cannot afford a slip-up against Empoli.
With pacesetters Napoli taking on AC Milan at Stadio San Siro, Inter could whittle down a four-point gap on Wednesday.
They can draw confidence from winning their last six away league games against the Azzurri without conceding.
