According to The Star, personal reasons have made a return to the Netherlands particularly appealing at this stage of his career.

Hamer’s future has been the subject of speculation throughout the summer following the Blades’ failure to gain promotion back to the Premier League.

However, the 28-year-old featured in both of Sheffield United’s opening two games of the new campaign, with Ruben Selles now installed as manager.

It has been claimed that Hamer is interested in a move back to the Netherlands due to personal reasons.

While he was born in Brazil, he grew up in the Netherlands and would now be keen on a return to the country if an exit from Sheffield United is going to materialise.

However, it’s believed that the playmaker is not currently interested in a move away from the Blades if it means remaining in England.

It was reported by Sacha Tavolieri earlier this summer that PSV Eindhoven are interested in a deal to sign Hamer, but no move has come to fruition with under two weeks left in the market.

Leeds United previously showed interest in Hamer in the form of an offer worth £13 million last summer, but the Whites have made no such approaches this year.

It’s understood that Sheffield United would consider an offer if it reaches their asking price, no immediate price tag has been given for the 28-year-old.

Gustavo Hamer’s importance to Sheffield United

Hamer is into his third season at Bramall Lane, having made the switch from Coventry City in 2023.

He was a key part of the team’s run to the play-off final in the previous campaign, contributing nine goals and seven assists from 41 regular league appearances.

Sheffield United have made a slow start to life under Selles, losing both of their opening two league fixtures.

Next up for the Yorkshire outfit is a home clash against Millwall on 23 August.

Keeping Hamer would be great business for Sheffield United

It hasn’t clicked for Sheffield United under Selles so far, and getting the best out of Hamer will be key to turning things around.

But it has still only been two games, so there should be no reason to panic just yet.

Keeping someone of Hamer’s quality would still be preferable than losing him for anything other than a premium price.

The playmaker has a proven track record at this level, and could be key to the team pushing for promotion again this year.
