Refereee Ivan Kruzliak has received criticism for something of a hit-or-miss evening in yesterday’s match between Inter Milan and Feyenoord.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that the Slovakian official got the penalty decisions right, but made a couple simple errrors.

The official awarded Feyenoord a penalty towards the end of the first half. And this was for a clear foul by Inter’s Hakan Calhanoglu on Jakub Moder inside the penalty area.

Then, Kruzliak pointed to the spot after a foul by Feyenoord’s Thomas Beelen on Mehdi Taremi. The contact was light, but it was there, and the Gazzetta argue that it was the right decision.

Beelen seemed to have given away another penalty later in the second half. This was for a challenge on Marcus Thuram.

Kruzliak did point to the spot on that occasion. However, notes the Gazzetta, the referee needed the VAR to see that it was a dive by the Inter striker.

Kruzliak gave Thuram a yellow card for simulation in the end, after overriding the penalty.

There were some almost bizarre errors from Kruzliak, however.

In the view of the Gazzetta, Givairo Read was very lucky to escape a yellow card early on. The newspaper argue that his late tackle on Henrikh Mkhitaryan was clearly bookable.

Then, there was a sequence at the end of the first half where Inter midfielder Davide Frattesi was fouled.

The loose ball to broke to Inter, who were attacking in space.

Kruzliak seemed to play advantage here. However, just as the Nerazzurri counterattack was beginning to pick up steam, the official blew his whistle for the foul on Frattesi.

This seemed a strange, caught-in-two-mind decisions. And to top it off, Kruzliak did not issue a yellow card for the foul on Frattesi.

Lastly, notes the Gazzetta, there was a moment where Kruzliak required his VAR to sort out a “mistaken identity” issue after he had mixed up Read and Gijs Smal when issuing a yellow card.
