The writing appears to be on the wall for Ruud Van Nistelrooy at Leicester City, and based on this season’s performances, few would be surprised if he’s replaced before the Championship campaign kicks off. Frank Sinclair, speaking exclusively to EPL Index, offered sharp insight into what has gone wrong for the Foxes and why Russell Martin could be the man to lead the rebuild.
When Van Nistelrooy took over from Steve Cooper in November, he inherited a team already battling for Premier League survival. His debut was promising, overseeing a 3-1 win against West Ham United, but that initial spark quickly fizzled out. One win in 20 games paints a bleak picture.

Frank Sinclair didn’t pull punches in his assessment. “There seems a lack of clarity and culture at the club, with the playing style and the belief,” he said. “Losing so many home games without scoring is difficult and Ruud wasn’t able to change the way the team was going.”
It’s hard to disagree. For a club just two years removed from lifting the FA Cup and pushing for European football, Leicester have looked a shadow of themselves. The disconnect on the pitch mirrors what many fans sense behind the scenes: a club unsure of its direction.
With Russell Martin heavily linked as Van Nistelrooy’s potential successor, Sinclair provided compelling reasons why the former Southampton boss could be a good fit. “He really impresses me,” said Sinclair. “He has a certain style he likes to play, his principle are set in his mind and he believes this can achieve success.”
Martin guided Southampton to promotion and has built a reputation for possession-based football with clear tactical structure. Although his stint in the Premier League didn’t bear fruit, his Championship credentials are hard to overlook. With Leicester aiming for an immediate return to the top flight, his experience at this level could prove invaluable.

With parachute payments cushioning the financial blow of relegation, Leicester are well placed to mount a serious promotion campaign. “Adding to this the quality within the squad is good for Championship level,” Sinclair pointed out. “If Russell Martin comes in… he knows the Championship well to give Leicester a fresh approach for next season.”
Indeed, the Championship is a gruelling, often unpredictable league, but one where momentum and clarity of vision count for a lot. Under Martin, Leicester could rediscover a consistent identity and give fans a reason to believe again.
Ultimately, Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s appointment felt more like a gamble than a calculated move. “It was a big call to get him in, given his previous few games at Man Utd were his only taste of Premier League management,” said Sinclair. The club’s reluctance to part ways despite a clear downward trajectory is understandable on a human level, but sentiment doesn’t win points.
As things stand, change is not just necessary, it feels inevitable. Russell Martin might not be a miracle worker, but he offers a pathway forward that’s built on structure, experience, and a vision that Leicester sorely need.
