Pundit Carlton Palmer believes Millwall’s Japhet Tanganga is ready for a move to the Premier League after top-flight duo Wolves and West Ham registered their interest.

The 25-year-old joined the Lions on an initial loan in January 2024, playing a big role in ensuring the Londoners avoided a relegation battle after Neil Harris’ appointment last season.

Despite suffering with inconsistent form this term, the former Spurs man has gone from strength-to-strength starring for Millwall, making 29 appearances and starting every game he has been available for.

Such impressive displays led to Tanganga’s future being up in the air at The Den during the January transfer window, with reports claiming Wolves and Sheffield United were looking to sign the defender last month.

However, Tanganga stayed put in East London, but speculation is already beginning to ramp up again heading into the summer, with Wolves maintaining an interest and bitter rivals West Ham touted to be making a move, according to GiveMeSport.

The report reveals that Wanderers are expected to send a scout to watch Tanganga when Millwall face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup, while they claim Ipswich and Southampton have also identified the player as a ‘potential recruit’.

With Millwall expected to wave goodbye to Tanganga in the summer provided he can remain fit, Carlton Palmer has spoken to Football League World about how much Millwall should get for their star.

Carlton Palmer believes Millwall will receive big money for Japhet Tanganga

Speaking to Football League World, pundit Carlton Palmer believes the Lions will profit financially from Japhet Tanganga’s success in the second tier, insisting he is too good for the Championship.

Palmer said: “Wolves and West Ham are two of the clubs who are tracking Japhet Tanganga, who continues to impress at Millwall.

“He is a cut above this level, we all know that, he’s just struggled with injuries, but the 25-year-old has managed to stay fit and has played a big role in the Lions getting out of a relegation battle under Neil Harris last season, while he’s continued to improve in this campaign.

“I think when he signed for the club, Japhet must have had a conversation with the hierarchy that if a Premier League club came knocking, then they would look at it. They’re obviously not going to sell him on the cheap, and they will be looking at getting big money after he finishes this season.”

Palmer added: “He is capable of playing in the Premier League, he’s got the physical tools to cope with the demands of the top-flight with his positional play and reading of the game, while he has tremendous recovery pace.

“There’s no doubt he’ll go on to be a top defender if he can stay fit, but Millwall will be in a position to demand a huge sum of money for him, and I’m sure the right offer will come so they can reinvest the funds properly.”

Japhet Tanganga's Millwall exit will be a blow, but provides financial opportunity

Millwall will be weakened when Japhet Tanganga eventually leaves the club, with the Lions currently having a Premier League standard defender in their backline.

Signing him on a permanent deal means Millwall are set to receive a hefty amount of cash for him, and while they will be left short at the back in the summer, the money received will give the club a great chance of building a better all-round squad that is capable of pushing for promotion to the top-flight.

Millwall have been in search of an injection of cash for sometime to push towards the top end of the division, and this sale could be a difference maker next season to turning Millwall into a feared Championship prospect.
