With Manchester City having already begun the rebuild of their squad this month the possibility that the process will continue in the summer looms large. Several areas of Pep Guardiola’s squad do need to be regenerated. One of those positions could be in goal. Manchester City’s goalkeeping situation isn’t as secure as it once might have been. There are question marks surrounding Ederson’s future at the club beyond this season. With that in mind has a clue emerged that reveals Manchester City’s goalkeeping plans for next summer?
Steve Kay has reported for Football Transfers that Manchester City have identified FC Porto keeper Diogo Costa as a potential replacement for Ederson. Kay goes on to report that Manchester City are aiming to make Costa their number-one keeper next summer. Furthermore, Kay reports that transfer talks have already begun and Diogo Costa could head to the Etihad next summer. Steve Kay further reports that Ederson could head to the Saudi Pro League at the end of this season. If that proves to be the case then City will need a new number one keeper. Diogo Costa would fit that bill for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Obviously, Manchester City’s need for a new goalkeeper will depend on if Ederson departs the club at the end of this season. That remains to be seen. But as Kay reports indications are that the Brazilian could be set to leave Manchester City at the end of the season. Ederson has been a warrior and a stalwart for Pep Guardiola’s side. But if he does seek a new challenge then City will need to find a suitable replacement.
Diogo Costa could be that player. He is firmly established as Portugal’s number one keeper and he has shown how good he is during his time with FC Porto. So far this season he has kept 11 clean sheets in 17 league matches for FC Porto this season. He is a quality keeper and his shot-stopping is excellent. Costa isn’t as proficient with his feet as Ederson but no keeper is. But he can help play out from the back and at 25 years of age his best years are ahead of him. There is no perfect replacement for Ederson but Costa could step in and become City’s number one keeper if he did arrive at the Etihad next summer.
Manchester City’s goalkeeping plans may be coming to light. It’s looming as a position City will need to strengthen if Ederson does leave at the end of the season. Diogo Costa could prove to be a shrewd signing if City do move for the Portuguese international next summer.
