England’s Under-21 team kicked off their Euro campaign yesterday with a comfortable 3-1 win over Czechia and Harvey Elliott was one of the standout performers.

The Liverpool midfielder scored the opening goal of the game as Lee Carsley’s men got their tournament off to the perfect start.

“I thought the way the boys dug deep and controlled the game towards the end, I think it was an incredible performance and we need to build, recover and go again,” said Elliott.

Elliott praised James McAtee for his fine work in assisting him: “I just needed to be in the right place at the right time, make sure I got a clean strike and hit the target. With my ability, I’m able to score from those situations and angles. It was a lovely set from James McAtee, who set it up perfectly.

“It’s a lovely feeling when the ball hits the net and I felt it controlled the game. We were able to see it through to half-time, regroup and go again for the second half.

“It was an incredible night as well – the fans were really good and created an amazing atmosphere. It was a pleasure to play in front of them, a great game and a great way to start the tournament.”

England aren’t getting ahead of themselves however and have two games left to play in Group D, including a very tough fixture against Germany. Next on the agenda however is Slovenia, and Elliott said: “We have another important game coming.

“It’s a very quick turnaround with not too much time to think about what’s to come. You just need to go into games, hopefully get the job done and worry about things afterwards.”

Jonathan Rowe and Charlie Cresswell scored the other two goals as England cruised to victory, whilst Tino Livramento caught the eye, the Newcastle full-back continuing his fine form from the Premier League season and being awarded player of the match.
