Ex-Spurs favourites delighted to see their former club end long wait for major silverware

Spurs won their first trophy since 2008 and first piece of European silverware for 41 years at San Mames.

Congratulatory messages flooded in on social media for the north Londoners, who cemented a return to Champions League football despite languishing in 17th place in the Premier League table.

Among those to send a message was the club’s all-time record goalscorer Kane, who took to X to quote tweet Spurs’ ‘Europa League Champions!!!’ post.

“Congratulations,” Kane’s message read, tagging the official Spurs account in his reply. The England captain did not win a major trophy during his years at Spurs, but ended his own drought with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga this term.

Pochettino, who guided Tottenham to the Champions League final back in 2019, posted on his Instagram story: “Congratulations to the Spurs family”.

The Argentine, now the head coach of the US men’s national team, was in charge of Spurs for 293 games. He then had spells with Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea before moving Stateside.

On TNT Sports, Gareth Bale said that the Europa League crown had “got rid of the stigma” of being “Spursy”, which the club’s social media admin and several Spurs stars humorously alluded to on their accounts.

Bale, who did not win a trophy either in his time at White Hart Lane, instead invented the phrase “United-y” to replace the term, as well as saying that the trophy was “amazing for the club”.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Bale continued. “Absolutely delighted for the club. All the fans, the amount of years they’ve waited, they’ll celebrate this night with a lot of alcohol.

Fellow TNT Sports pundit Peter Crouch, who played 93 games for Spurs, scoring 24 goals, tweeted: “Come on you Spurs!!!” with champagne and trophy emojis attached.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson was in the BBC Radio 5 Live commentary team in Bilbao, and he tweeted: “It's not about the performance. It's all about the result. And Spurs got it. GET IN THERE!!! Spurs fans. Say hello to a major trophy and to the Champions League.”

Lucas Moura, Tottenham’s hero en route to the Champions League final in 2019, also posted a video of himself on Instagram celebrating and singing in a Spurs shirt as the final whistle blew in Bilbao.
