The Bluebirds fans had plenty to say about Omer Riza's spiky exchange.
Cardiff City boss Omer Riza has come under fire for a spiky exchange with a reporter in his post-match interview following his side’s 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Good Friday.
With Derby County slipping to a home defeat to Luton earlier in the day, the Bluebirds were unable to capitalise on the opportunity to lift themselves out of the bottom three, and remain firmly in trouble at the foot of the Championship table.
They are now winless in their last five outings and, if Riza’s comments post-match are anything to go by (via ccfcinsider on X), then it’s fair to say he is starting to feel the pressure of what is a typically nerve-shredding relegation battle.
When quizzed on what his side could do differently in Easter Monday’s clash with Oxford in order to get a result, Riza abruptly replied: “Score goals and not concede.”
The Cardiff boss then followed that up with: “It’s football, isn’t it, you’ve got to score more than the opposition.”
When he was then pressed on how he and his team would go about doing that, Riza shot back: “You tell me how I go about doing it.”
Riza’s comments were indicative of a boss who is struggling to get a tune out of his side, as well as knowing that time is running out on them.
While securing victory at Bramall Lane was always going to be a tall order, the Bluebirds are now left with just three games to save their second tier status, or they face an embarrassing relegation into League One for the first time since 2003.
Unsurprisingly, the clip of Riza’s sharp exchange has gone viral on X, where City fans were quick to wade in with their thoughts on his statements.
One fan replied: “He does not help himself whatsoever wowwww.”
Another Cardiff supporter wrote: “Calling fans clueless in midweek, going at journos tonight, God knows what he’ll be doing at Norwich if he’s somehow still here.”
Others were slightly more sympathetic towards Riza, with one supporter adding: “It’s hard to watch, he’s struggling clearly and not just as a manager. Feel for him a bit.”
As the only side in the bottom six to pick up any points, Luton were the real winners on Good Friday.
Matt Bloomfield’s side secured a crucial three points away at Derby in what was a vital ‘six pointer.’ That result meant victory at Bramall Lane could have hauled Cardiff out of the bottom three, but they couldn’t get the job done.
With just five points now separating the bottom five teams, it looks likely that the Championship’s relegation battle could go right down to the final minutes of the season.
For Riza’s Bluebirds, they simply have to find wins from somewhere. They have won just one of their last nine in the league, but are now at the stage where they are rapidly running out of time if they want to save themselves from the drop.
They face a huge game on home turf on Monday, when Oxford United, who still aren’t safe from relegation themselves, make the trip to South Wales.
After that, the Bluebirds welcome play-off chasing West Brom to the Cardiff City Stadium, before travelling to face Norwich City on the final day.
With Cardiff currently sat on 42 points, one point below both Luton and Derby, plus three behind Hull, it seems likely that two wins will be needed from their final three games.
While that would still leave them short of the magical 50-point mark that is spoken about so often, a final tally of 48 would at least give them a fighting chance.
