Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has moved to defend Fermín López, in the aftermath of his side’s meeting with Sevilla.
Barcelona were of course back in action on Sunday evening, making the trip to Andalusia for a La Liga clash with Sevilla.
The aforementioned Fermín, for his part, was introduced to the fray off the bench at half-time, making an immediate impact in putting the Blaugrana back in front courtesy of a fine header.
It wasn’t long, however, before the 21-year-old’s evening took a turn for the worse.
Following a lengthy VAR check, Fermín saw his punishment for a challenge in midfield upgraded from a yellow to a red card.
As much, in the end, did not prove costly for a Barca outfit who marched on to a 4-1 triumph.
Speaking to the media in the game’s aftermath, though, the subject of Fermín’s dismissal was nevertheless put to headmaster Hansi Flick.
And the German tactician made use of the opportunity to defend his midfield starlet:
“I’m happy with the intensity Gavi and Fermín play with, and what happened today can happen.
“I think the pitch was wet, he slipped into the opponent, and normally that’s not intentional, but it happened, and we have to accept that.”
