Etienne Vaessen has apologised for his behaviour after the match between FC Groningen and Ajax. The goalkeeper was given a four-match suspension (one of which was conditional) for punching Ajax staff member Felipe Sánchez Mateos.
Emotions ran high at the full-time whistle at the Euroborg Stadion as Ajax gave up the lead to draw 2-2 and ultimately concede the Eredivisie title to PSV.
After Thijmen Blokzijl’s goal levelled the score right at the death, various players and staff members got into a fight, with Vaessen admittedly crossing the line.
Groningen have accepted the settlement proposal of the prosecutor of professional football, and the goalkeeper has since released a statement.
“Apologies for my behaviour after the match”, Vaessen wrote on Instagram. “There are several factors why I reacted like that, but that does not matter now! As a professional footballer, you have an exemplary function. Cross it out and continue.”
Due to his suspension, Vaessen will miss the first three matches of next season.
