The progress of Spurs youngster Jamie Donley during his loan spell at League One side Leyton Orient is common knowledge. The 20-year old impressed in front of a nationwide audience at the weekend against Manchester City, where his audacious shot from 40 yards forced an own goal that put Orient into the lead.
As with other on loan Spurs youngster, Josh Keeley, Donley has played a big part in the O's rise up the table, which has seen them lose just one game since the 26th of November - contributing with goals and assists from the number ten position.
Former Spurs player Graham Roberts has paid the young midfielder the ultimate compliment, saying that he reminds him of a certain David Beckham: "Our man Jamie Donley remind anyone of a future David Beckham! Works so hard and that left peg [is] unreal. Best thing is him and his family [are] Spurs crazy! But future at Tottenham [rather than Orient] in my view!"
As some fans may know, Beckham is also a former Spurs youth player, starting his career in North London - playing for the club between the ages of 12 and 16. If Donley is a quarter of the player Beckham turnt out to be, Spurs are in business.
It is not the only co-sign Donley has received in the last few days, with no other than Manchester City Pep Guardiola saying: "What a goal. Fantastic [the way] he shoot[s], the quality, the technique and the speed, the flight of the ball. When you concede this goal, it is just [right] to congratulate the guy. I think it was Donley. He is an incredible left-foot player.”
Some high praise indeed, all round. It will be interesting to see what happens with Donley next season. The likelihood is a Championship loan, where he will hopefully get to play 40+ games. There is too the possibility of him staying at Spurs, and being part of the first team picture - with some fans already stating that they hope that is the case.
It is probably likely that he is at least with the club for pre-season, whilst getting a chance to play in some of the friendlies, before then probably making a move. That said, the club may want him to intergrate fully at a potential loan side. He joined Orient in August last year, and did not find himself in the team until November. Ideally, Spurs will not want that happening again - though it does not appear to have done too much harm in the end.
Along side Keeley, George Abbott, and Luka Vuskovic, Donley is definitely right up there for the most promising youngsters at Spurs that have been out on loan this season.
