NJ/NY Gotham FC has already lost a few players to Free Agency like Delanie Sheehan. Fans are waiting for the team to bring in some players. They must remember it is early in the season and there will be new signings. Plus, college players could possibly be signed since the draft no longer exists.
While there has been player news over the last week, there are also other stories to cover. Here is the next Gotham FC news roundup that includes the stadium and more.
On Tuesday, Gotham FC announced the end-of-season contract statuses and decisions. Everyone who was named a free agent previously was listed as such, with the team listing them as "Out of Contract". Those who have parted ways with the club were listed as "Mutual Option Not Exercised".
Notably, Skyscraper Blues previously said there were eight total free agents since Sinead Farrelly and Kelley O'Hara are retiring. However, Jéssica Silva was not mentioned since she was signed late in the summer and was not on the NWSL's list. As a result, there were nine free agents.
In addition, Midge Purce is listed as being out of contract. Therefore, one can assume she did not agree to her option and might be seeking a larger contract. Whether she is back with Gotham FC is yet to be seen.
Otherwise, there are 17 players under contract. It is possible a few of those players could leave via a trade within the NWSL or via a sale to another team in another league.
Gotham FC star Lynn Williams is officially married! The forward tied the knot to former Pepperdine University basketball player Marley Biyendolo. The celebration happened in Malibu and numerous current and former teammates of Williams were at the wedding. They included but were not limited to Rose Lavelle, Becky Sauerbrunn, and Emily Sonnett.
Gotham FC plays at the home of the New York Red Bulls, and the stadium has a new name. Red Bull Arena is being rebranded as Sports Illustrated Stadium. In some ways, it is an interesting move. Obviously, the Red Bulls are a Red Bull GmbH club. The name Red Bull Arena made sense.
While many will associate the name with the magazine, the deal is through Sports Illustrated Tickets. By utilizing the name, the New York Red Bulls will bring in money. It is unknown whether Gotham will do so as well. In addition, Sports Illustrated Tickets will be the official ticketing partner of RBNY.
Hopefully, Gotham FC will benefit from the name change. While the stadium is not theirs, it is still the team's home. If it is not beneficial, then perhaps another New York area team can pounce and make a future the Bats cannot refuse.
