The day after their 2-0 loss to the Orlando Pride, NJ/NY Gotham FC gave their fans something positive to focus on instead. The club announced the loan signing of Brazilian international Geyse, 26, from WSL side Manchester United Football Club. The loan is for the entirety of 2025 and includes an option to make the move permanent.
Geyse joins as the third international signing in this window after Ghanaian Stella Nyamekye and fellow Brazilian Gabi Portilho. This signing means Gotham now has all seven of their international roster spots filled for the time being but could see one of those spots open up when Portuguese international Jéssica Silva's contract expires midseason.
This signing now means Gotham FC has 10 forwards on the active roster, more than any other position. Despite this, there is a spot open for her in the lineup. While she has predominantly played on the right for Man United, she can play centrally and, perhaps most crucially, on the left.
The left-wing/midfield position is really the only spot in Gotham's Starting XI that does not have a solidified top option. Ella Stevens and Sarah Schupansky have rotated in and out of that position throughout the opening two games of the season and have played well, but Geyse potentially gives them a real starting option at that spot as a more natural fit.
This signing potentially allows for Stevens to play in a more central position where she had the vast majority of her goal-scoring success last season. The introduction of Geyse also takes a little bit off of Schupansky's plate. While she has handled her first two games as a professional incredibly well, she is of course still a rookie and perhaps having a little bit less to do in the here and now helps her deal with the grind that is a full NWSL season for the first time in her career.
While Geyse's time at United was not the most fruitful on or off the field, there is still reason to be excited about this signing. The talent is very clearly on display whenever one watches her play. Perhaps a player like her could have made a difference on Sunday by being able to create space not just for herself but for her teammates as well.
But the forward does not just have the tricks and dribbling ability in her locker. There is a real goalscoring ability as well. While she only managed two league goals in two seasons at United, and her one season at FC Barcelona before that was good but not great, in the 21-22 season she managed 20 goals in 27 league matches for Madrid CFF. This tied her with then Barcelona, now Bay FC forward Asisat Oshoala for the Golden Boot in Spain's Liga F.
It was very clear that Geyse and Manchester United were not a fit any longer and that a move away was best for both parties. Hopefully, a move somewhere a little closer to home where she will be able to play with three native Portuguese speakers, two of who are fellow Brazilian internationals, should put her in a better mindset to play at the level fans have seen from her in the past.
