The Sky Blues could be set to lose a number of top stars when the season comes to a close
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
For what seems like the fifth transfer window in a row, Coventry City had been holding their breath trying to keep hold of as many key names as they possibly could by the time the deadline for any deals came around.
The Sky Blues have a whole host of stars that have attracted various amounts of interest over the past few years, with the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Callum O’Hare and Gus Hamer all shining in the Midlands before moving elsewhere, while the current crop continue to excel in the second tier.
By the time February 3 came along this year though, only Fabio Tavares had been shipped out to Burton Albion for the remainder of the campaign, while Frank Lampard was able to add Matt Grimes to his central midfield options for the second-half of the campaign.
While they can relax for the time being, it will only be a matter of time before Cov fans are on high alert once again, and we put it to Football League World’s City fan pundit Dan McDermott to tell us which players could well be on their way out during the off-season.
There have been rumours surrounding Ben Sheaf’s future for quite some time now, with the midfield maestro proving to be a step above the level during his four-and-a-half-year association with the club.
The former Arsenal man oozes class as he marauds around the centre of the park, and while injury keeps him out at this moment in time, he will likely continue to have an impact once he recovers from a muscle issue.
That form hasn’t gone unnoticed elsewhere, with Fulham, Ipswich Town and Luton all credited with interest in the past, while Championship leaders Leeds United are also said to be in the mix.
As a result, it is no surprise to see the 26-year-old named by McDermott as a key name that is likely to be on his way out of the club soon, with his contract situation not helping Cov’s stance on matters.
Dan told FLW: “Now I would love to name just one player, but as a Cov fan we all know there is a good chance that two, or maybe even three of our key players leave the club this summer.
“Ben Sheaf is front and centre of that list, with just over 18 months left on his contract, he is coming to the last year of his contract and there is no talk of a new deal.
“So I think it is highly likely that we cash in this summer, especially now that we have Matt Grimes; I would love to see them both in a City shirt but I can’t see it happening, I think Sheaf will be going.”
Sheaf isn’t the only name that has been linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks and months, with full-back Milan Van Ewijk also a man said to have been attracting interest of late.
Once again, it is Premier League side Fulham leading the charge for the Dutchman, with ESPN Netherlands reporting as much last month, although nothing came to fruition regarding any deal.
It is also no surprise to hear that Haji Wright makes the list, with the American International netting 23 goals in 59 league games for the Sky Blues during his time with the club, leading to bitter rivals Leicester City and Ipswich Town reportedly sniffing around.
McDermott continued: “Then there is Milan van Ewijk, he has had interest in the summer, he has had interest in January just gone, so I think there is going to be a good chance that he will have interest in this summer coming.
“So there is two right there that will be linked with moves away, but I think Haji Wright will be near the top of the list as well, to be honest.
“But Ben Sheaf is the main one for me, I think Ben Sheaf will be gone in the summer.”
