EFL pundit Adrian Clarke expects more from Grady Diangana and Mikey Johnston at West Brom.
West Bromwich Albion are in the mix for automatic promotion from the Championship this season, but EFL pundit Adrian Clarke is concerned at their lack of goals, with Grady Diangana and Mikey Johnston called out for their lack of contribution to Carlos Corberan's attack.
It's fair to say that Albion don’t have much momentum right now, and the four-game unbeaten run is made up entirely of draws, and consecutive defeats prior to that means they haven’t won in six league outings. They do not concede regularly, but their output has dropped at the other end after a promising start to the season.
On the face of it, the Baggies are in a healthy position in the play-off places, and most fans would’ve taken that after a busy summer following their play-off semi-final defeat to Southampton last season. However, when you’re six without a win, it raises valid concerns.
West Brom have managed just three goals in that period, which includes failing to score in four of the games. Now, after 12 Championship fixtures, Albion haven’t found the net in five of them. That's despite having a range of attacking options at Corberan's disposal.
It's evident that Corberan must find a solution, but some players can perhaps be held accountable as well. He will undoubtedly want more from the likes of Karlan Grant, Jed Wallace, Mikey Johnston, and Grady Diangana in terms of direct output.
Adrian Clarke was particularly critical of the latter two players, speaking via the What The EFL? Podcast. Matt Davies-Adams asked: "If there was an award for the least impressive team in the top six, I'm pretty sure they would win it.
"No wins in six, four draws on the bounce, and three of them were goalless. Can you give Baggies fans any positivity here that this is going to turn around?"
Clarke responded by stating that the forward players ought to be contributing to more in front of goal. He said: "They've still got Tom Fellows. He is useful.
"We like Tom Fellows. The assist king; though, he's not assisted many lately.
"I can't believe he was on the bench against Cardiff. Odd, he's the one who you can rely on. It's guys like Mikey Johnston and Grady Diangana who have been red-hot at certain times for West Brom.
"They have kind of gone AWOL. They are missing in action. They need to get a little bit more out of them. One goal in five matches is what West Brom have scored.
"Not good, and I was looking at the list of goalscorers. It's a very short list. Four of them! It's November and four players have scored this season!
"For some clubs, four players might have scored on the opening weekend. [Josh] Maja, [Alex] Mowatt, [Karlan] Grant, and [Jayson] Molumby. No one else has notched yet.
It's fair to say that they should both be doing more in front of goal, relative to their talents; however, it's fair to say that solutions could be found via Corberan tactically as well.
Diangana and Johnston provide West Brom with plenty of flair and unpredictability in wide areas, excelling in taking on defenders with direct dribbling at speed. Their ability to create space for others and carry the ball effectively helps Corberan's side, but their lack of end product is becoming a frustration.
Both players can stretch defences and create chances, and they also possess strong ball-striking from range, yet their contribution in terms of goals and assists has been underwhelming for a while now. For a side looking to go better than just the play-offs, the inconsistency in delivering meaningful output has been a letdown.
West Brom need to convert solid performances into results and points more consistently. They have failed to register a single goal or assist so far between them.
