Although not Viktor Gyokeres, Manchester United are reportedly pushing to reunite head coach Rúben Amorim with one of his former favourites at Sporting CP.

After a disastrous second half to the 2024–25 season, with Amorim’s project failing to take off as expected, this summer has become a pivotal one.

A summer of change

It is an opportunity for INEOS to back the Portuguese tactician with players suited to his system, while moving on those who are not.

Matheus Cunha has already joined, there is talk of Bryan Mbeumo arriving, a striker is expected to be signed, and fresh links have emerged regarding a move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

A goalkeeper swoop has also been mooted.

But amid all the transfer talk, there has been concern over the lack of noise around a defensive signing.

A defensive addition would be wise

With Amorim favouring a back three, he needs several quality centre-backs for rotation and to cover injuries.

Following the exits of Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans, United’s centre-back depth has taken a significant hit.

A defensive signing makes perfect sense, but with the clear priority on strengthening the attack, can the Red Devils also squeeze in a defensive addition?

According to Football Transfers, yes, United can.

The UK publication claims Amorim has identified Sporting defender Goncalo Inacio as the ideal defensive addition.

Inacio to sign, but on a loan deal

The United boss is keen on a reunion with the 23-year-old.

Not originally part of their transfer plan, United have had to get creative.

It is claimed they are set to propose a loan deal with a €40 million (£34 million) obligation to buy.

While Inacio was once considered untouchable, the Portuguese champions are now reportedly open to the idea of letting him go.

Whether that proposal convinces them remains to be seen, but United are optimistic about finalising this deal.

Links to the Portuguese international are not new. He has been on United’s radar for some time, with speculation intensifying after Amorim took over at Old Trafford.

While Borussia Dortmund are also thought to be keen on the defender, United have an advantage due to Amorim’s relationship with the player.

That said, if the deal goes through, Inacio could prove instrumental in helping the United backline execute Amorim’s tactical vision and lay the foundation for a new era of dominance.
