Less than two weeks after their heart-breaking KNVB final loss in Rotterdam, AZ Alkmaar are looking for revenge as they look to end their eight match winless run.
With the KNVB cup final finishing 1-1 after 120 minutes, Go Ahead Eagles defeated AZ 4-2 on penalties to win their first major trophy in 92 years.
Now, AZ must travel to Deventer to forget their cup heartbreak, and to solidify their European play-off place.
Speaking to Voetbal International, Alkmaar boss Maarten Martens says, “I want to see a certain behaviour from my players on Sunday: that we are looking for sporting revenge. I want to see conviction, especially in personality. When things are going well, it is easy to pull the cart. The situation is different now.” Jordy Clasie, Troy Parrott and Kristijan Belic remain sidelined for De Kaasboeren.
Whilst Alkmaar lie in 6th place, Go Ahead Eagles sit in 7th, level on 47 points, but with a far inferior goal difference. Having not finished higher than 9th in the Dutch top flight since 1971, the Eagles are enjoying one of the most successful seasons in the club’s history.
Kick off is at 14:30 CET.
