Girona have officially secured their place in next season’s Champions League, following an incredible 4-2 comeback victory over Barcelona at Montilivi – the result also ensures that Real Madrid are La Liga champions.

It was a fast start to proceedings, with two goals inside the opening four minutes. Andreas Christensen volleyed home to give Barcelona a dream start, but they were immediately pegged back by Artem Dovbyk’s headed effort, which was his 20th goal of a remarkable debut season in Spanish football.

Robert Lewandowski would make it 2-1 just before half time from the penalty spot after Lamine Yamal was fouled by Miguel Gutierrez. Barcelona looked good at that stage to go on and secure the three points, but an incredible fightback from the home side denied that.

The difference maker was Christian Portu, who had a hand in the remaining three goals. He scored less than 60 seconds after coming off the bench following a huge error from Sergi Roberto, before setting up Miguel Gutierrez moments later, as it went from 1-2 to 3-2 in the blink of an eye.

Portu himself made the result safe soon after, as he brilliantly volleyed home from the edge of the box. It capped an unbelievable comeback, which is fitting of the season that Girona have had.

It stayed 4-2 until full time, which sparked wild scenes among the Girona supporters at Montilivi. The result means that they leapfrog Barcelona into second place too, but the big story is that their Champions League place is finally secured.
