Manchester United forward Geyse has expressed gratitude to her teammates for their support following her brother’s passing, which they showed during their 4-2 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

Ella Toone scored a hat-trick on her Women’s Super League return from injury as United secured a thrilling derby victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Leah Galton also got on the score sheet, to ensure the Reds leapfrogged their rivals in the Women’s Super League standings.

Days before the match, United boss Marc Skinner confirmed that Geyse would not be available for selection as she was given some time off to deal with a tragedy in her family.

After the final match, the United squad posed for a picture with Geyse’s jersey. The club posted the message, “That one was for you, @Geyse_Ferreiraa.”

“Stay strong — we’re all thinking of you.”

In response, Geyse took to social media, confirming the heartbreaking news of her brother’s passing.

The Brazilian also wrote, “This has been one of the most difficult times of my life. The loss of my brother, Geovanne, left a void that words cannot fill.”

“But, amidst so much pain, I found strength in the love and support I received. I want to thank Manchester United, my teammates, the staff and all the friends who were by my side.”

“You not only respected my grief, but also gave me a collective hug that crossed any distance.”

“I am immensely grateful for every message, gesture and tribute. Knowing that I am not alone in this journey gives me the strength to move forward. Thank you for being my family far from home.”

“My brother will always be with me, and I am sure he felt embraced by all of you too.”

Skinner’s side are back in action on Wednesday when they face City in the quarter-final of the Women’s League Cup.
