Ruben Amorim says people must understand “the context” of his current Man Utd team following criticism of his side’s performance in the draw with Man City.
Former United legends Gary Neville and Roy Keane were among those to criticise United’s lack of goal threat on Sky Sports, with Neville bemoaning a lack of intensity and passion in the derby clash.
“There might be kids coming to watch their first Manchester derby and they’ve watched that,” Neville said.
“I get 0-0 draws can happen but that wasn’t a Premier League game of football. That wasn’t representative of the Premier League.
“Seeing them walk around the pitch together at the end shaking each other’s hands and smiling together, where was the disappointment that they’d played like that and drew 0-0?
But responding, Amorim said: “I understand everything. I understand that Gary Neville is critical about everything so I understand that part.
“And then I understand that we are in a moment where we are doing the worst season in history. Man City won everything in the past and this season is struggling.
“We are not in the best moments to give the best spectacle to every fan.
“We are not fighting for the big things so of course it’s different and you have to look at the context of the game.
“But I understand the critical aspect of the players that played in this game and in a different way (to previous derbies) because they were fighting every time for titles so it’s a different context.”
Amorim did admit that his side’s lack of goals is a concern after another game in which his team failed to find the back of the net, however.
“I think the game was different to (the defeat to) Nottingham but we had the same lack of goals,” he said.
“We did well but Ederson was there. It’s really important to score goals to win football matches.
“At the moment it is still really hard every day but next season is going to be so much different.”
