In statements you’d barely have thought you’d ever write Gary Neville has hit the nail on the head over Manchester City’s recent slump. The champions slumped to their 8th defeat in 11 games with their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium yesterday. The loss was a massive dent to Pep Guardiola’s side’s Premier League campaign and it left more questions than answers over this current Manchester City side.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville had this to say about Manchester City’s recent slide: “These Manchester City players have won four, five, six Premier League titles – they’ve kept going, they’ve been so consistent, so reliable! They’ve played every summer, every competition it feels like – fifty, sixty, seventy games a season. They’ve grown together and hit a wall together, they’re picking up injuries, they’ve lost their legs together, they’ve lost their confidence together. It’s just PERSPECTIVE! I’m sure in the dressing room, Pep Guardiola is reminding them that these are serial champion players. You CANNOT sit here and say it’s a disgrace, a joke – these are players who have achieved SO MUCH and they’ve just hit a wall together!”
The assessment from Gary Neville over Manchester City’s recent slide is a fair one. It is clear to see that Pep Guardiola’s squad may have reached the end of their era of dominance. Players appear fatigued due to a heavy workload and injuries have decimated Pep Guardiola’s squad. Even yesterday you could see illustrious players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and Kyle Walker were trying to do all they could at the Etihad. But they just look like their bodies have given all they can to the cause.
It has been a successful era for the world champions. 6 Premier League titles in 7 years and winning every major trophy available in between is a testament to this. But eventually all eras must end and Father Time catches everyone. That’s what we appear to be witnessing right now with this Manchester City squad. As Neville said this squad has been through the trenches together. They have scaled every mountain possible. It just now seems that the 24/25 season may be a step too far for this group of players.
Gary Neville hit the nail on the head with his assessment of the Manchester City squad following yesterday’s Manchester derby. It doesn’t make the result any easier to take but perhaps time has finally caught up to Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering squad.
