The January transfer window is now behind us, and there’s a feeling that the winter session produced more fireworks than the summer. Several high-profile moves sent shockwaves throughout the Serie A community as we look at the most eye-catching deals.
It’s been a while since Serie A news was as dominated by dramatic transfer dealings as it was this winter. From last-minute swoops to unexpected exits, Italy’s top flight saw a flurry of activity that reshaped squads and set the stage for an intense second half of the season.
Some clubs, like Juventus and Milan, reinforced their European ambitions, while others, like Inter, scrambled to plug gaps or offload underperforming stars. As the dust settles, let’s dive into the most eye-catching deals that define this thrilling January window.
#5 Daniel Maldini – Monza to Atalanta (Permanent)
Losing standout forward Ademola Lookman to a potentially long-term injury forced Gian Piero Gasperini to intervene in the market. As a result, Daniel Maldini left Monza to join Atalanta in a deal worth around €13 million.
After an eye-catching stint at the Brianteo, the 23-year-old attacking midfielder embarks on a new chapter in Bergamo. In all fairness, Maldini couldn’t have chosen a better place to continue his development than the Gewiss Stadium.
Gasperini has become famous for turning uncut gems into elite football stars. Given Maldini’s potential, this looks like a match made in heaven.
#4 Kyle Walker – Manchester City to Milan (Loan)
Kyle Walker needs no introduction. The man captained Manchester City’s golden generation under Pep Guardiola for years, winning countless trophies in England and abroad. In doing so, he earned a reputation as one of the best right-backs ever.
Known for his tremendous strength and speed, Walker is a nightmare for any forward. Though he is 34, his performance in Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina showed he’s still faster and more reliable than any Milan right-back since Cafu.
#3 Santiago Gimenez – Feyenoord to Milan (Permanent)
Milan’s decision to break the bank to sign Santiago Gimenez from Feyenoord has been a polarising subject. The Rossoneri partnered with Alvaro Morata after just six months to make room for the Mexican goal-getter.
Moreover, they paid the Dutch club around €32m to secure his services. Gimenez demonstrated his goalscoring capacity in the Eredivisie, but replicating those figures in Serie A could be a tall order. However, he arrives with high expectations.
#2 Randal Kolo Muani – PSG to Juventus (Loan)
Randal Kolo Muani’s loan switch from Paris Saint-Germain to Juventus could be a season-defining moment for the Turin giants. The Frenchman has tallied three goals in his first two league appearances for Thiago Motta’s side, immediately dislodging Dusan Vlahovic from the starting XI.
After a torrid one-and-a-half-year stint at the Parc des Princes, the 26-year-old looks on the verge of regaining his devastating Eintracht Frankfurt form. Kolo Muani’s scoring prowess could be the missing ingredient to consolidate Juventus’ stuttering top-four charge.
#1 Joao Felix – Chelsea to Milan (Loan)
Joao Felix’s transfer from Chelsea to Milan could be one of the most epic moves in recent memory. His technical brilliance, creativity, and versatility could provide the Rossoneri with the spark they’ve been missing in the final third.
However, questions remain over his consistency and adaptability to Serie A’s tactical demands. On the one hand, he could be Kaka’s long-lost successor. On the other hand, he could be another hyped Milan flop. Only time will tell.
