Arsenal have confirmed that Gabriel Jesus has suffered an ACL injury and will miss the rest of the season.

The Brazilian was taken off on a stretcher during the second half of Arsenal’s penalty shootout defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup after a collision with Bruno Fernandes.

Mikel Arteta confirmed in his subsequent post-match press conference that it did “not look good” and the knee in question was not the same one that saw him out for a prolonged period during the World Cup in 2022.

Here is the statement released by the club regarding Jesus’ injury:

“Further to being substituted with an injury during our match with Manchester United on Sunday, Gabriel Jesus has received extensive assessments, scans and specialist reviews which have confirmed that he has sustained an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

“Gabby will undergo surgery in the coming days and will soon begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme.

“We will continue to keep everyone updated with Gabby’s recovery, with everyone at the club fully focused on supporting Gabby to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”

Jesus’ injury comes at a bad time for the Gunners, who lost the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final 2-0 to Newcastle United in midweek, before losing on penalties to Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday.

The Brazilian international had just had his best goalscoring run of season, having scored six goals in his previous seven matches.

The 27-year-old joins Bukayo Saka; Ethan Nwaneri, Ben White, Riccardo Calafiori and Takehiro Tomiyasu on the sidelines for Mikel Arteta’s men ahead of the visit of north London rivals Tottenham on Wednesday.

Arteta had stated in his pre-match press conference that the prognosis was not looking good for Jesus: “I don’t want to confirm anything again until we have the final report this afternoon and I think it’s the doctor’s job to do that. But we were very worried immediately after the game and are very worried today.”
