Recently at St George’s Park, Manchester United star Gabby George discussed her comeback from injury and most recent call-up to the England Lionesses.
When asked about the emotions that have come with her most recent call-up, George explained how she is ‘proud of how far’ she has come since suffering a second ACL injury. She emphasised how she‘s ‘happy to keep progressing and enjoying football’ with the national team.
When asked about the support her cousin and fellow professional footballer Jesse Lingard provided during her recovery, George explained that he was a great help and ‘always on the other end of the phone’ and ‘understood it on a different level’, as he was also facing injury recovery on a similar timeline.
Discussing the significance of the most recent England camp, she explained: “Every camp we go into, we are preparing for the Euros next summer.”
Not dwelling too much on the tough selection process for Euro 2025, George said her dream is ‘to enjoy football’, which is something she is doing on a ‘daily basis.’ She went on to elaborate that her enjoyment of football is so significant as ‘you never know when that can be taken away from you’. As a player who has suffered two ACL injuries, George knows that firsthand.
When asked if, as a result of her injuries, she ever doubted the possibly of her return to football, George explained her most recent injury was ‘all about mentality’.
“You can always recover physically, but mentally is where it challenges you,” she continued. George also described how it was her resilient mentality that helped her recovery and return to the pitch.
The Man United defender admitted she was ‘speechless’ when she received the phone call to confirm her place in the most recent camp, despite being someone who is ‘never lost for words’. Overall, George seemed positive about her recent experiences both in the current Lionesses camp and at United. Now recovered from her most recent injury, she is keen to return to playing football.
