Frigan Hell! Rangers Fans Left Scunnered By £6M Striker Target

Rangers’ reported pursuit of Croatian striker Matija Frigan has raised more than a few eyebrows, not least because of his goal tally last season. Scoring just 14 times in 41 appearances for Westerlo, the numbers are far from exceptional, especially for a player supposedly worth in excess of six million pounds. In fact, that return equates to a goal every three matches which is hardly prolific for a club of Rangers’ stature looking to reclaim the Premiership title. It becomes even more difficult to justify when you consider that the price tag being quoted could go as high as seven million. For that kind of money you would expect a forward who hits 20 to 30 goals per season in a league of similar or better quality. While Frigan is only 21 and does show promise he is not the finished product and Rangers are not in a financial position to gamble on potential with such a hefty outlay. 20-player transfer breakdown of Rangers’ sweeping summer squad overhaul

The comparison with Cyril Dessers is also relevant. Dessers ended up with 22 goals in a struggling Rangers side yet has faced intense scrutiny all year for missing too many chances. If 22 goals is not good enough in Glasgow then how can 14 from Frigan be seen as worth spending a king’s ransom? It is a puzzling approach from the board and one that would be difficult to justify to supporters if it fails. Ibrox Noise homepage

Moreover these goals did not come in a top five league. The Belgian league while competitive is nowhere near the standard of even the Scottish Premiership in terms of physicality and intensity. Frigan would be stepping up significantly and would need to adapt quickly. There is no evidence yet that he could thrive in a more demanding environment. Rangers need proven quality not another project. Supporters will rightly question why such a large sum is being discussed for a player who has never scored more than 15 in a season. The pressure of playing at Ibrox is enormous and any player brought in at that cost would be expected to deliver instantly. Based on his record so far Frigan looks like a very expensive risk that Rangers simply cannot afford to take if they are serious about silverware next season.
