Birmingham City summer arrival Tommy Doyle is feeling positive as the Blues prepare for their Championship return after taking League One by storm last term.

Doyle arrived on a season-long loan from Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month, with the midfielder's signing being a huge statement for Blues as they aim to throw themselves into the promotion race following their ascent to the second tier.

With recent defensive addition Eiran Cashin sending out a message of intent following his loan arrival from Brighton last week, the feeling around St Andrew's is one of excitement at the moment.

Manager Chris Davies will be incredibly pleased with how the situation is developing as Birmingham's opening weekend clash against Ipswich draws closer.

Tommy Doyle says the club is "very much together"

Doyle is one of seven new players brought in by boss Chris Davies thus far. However, this has not caused issues in terms of the squad gelling.

"I feel like this club is very together," said Doyle, speaking to BBC Radio WM.

"You can feel that from the fans, to the manager, to the players and the owners, and it's going to take everybody to get us to where we need to.

"We're feeling good at the moment. We've got all the foundations to do that, so it's up to us to go out and make it happen."

Doyle carries experience from his promotion-winning campaign with Sheffield United in 2023, before moving to Wolves on loan following Matheus Nunes' move to Doyle's parent club, Manchester City.

Doyle was snapped up permanently by Wolves last summer; however, limited game time saw him leave the club on loan this summer.

The midfielder said the way Davies gets his team to play was a big part of him wanting to make the move across the Midlands: "You have to look at a team that suits you. When I spoke to the gaffer in the summer, he told me what he wanted from me and where he sees me - I enjoyed that conversation."

Doyle concluded: "But now is the time to go out and do the work - and I'm just ready to go."

The Blues welcome fellow promotion hopefuls Ipswich to St Andrew's on Friday, 8th August, with a win for either side being a huge statement of intent ahead of what both clubs are hoping is a prosperous campaign.

Tommy Doyle brings class to Birmingham's midfield

A fantastically gifted midfielder with an eye for a pass and a knack for setting the tempo of matches, Doyle will bring added class to an already top midfield.

Doyle has proven to be a capable operator in the top flight at Wolves. However, due to the systematic requirements of Vitor Pereira and the rise of Andre and Joao Gomes as a pair, he found himself making just three starts in the Premier League last term, while he made 21 substitute appearances.

The midfielder's class, though, is evident. The 23-year-old was instrumental in Sheffield United's successful 2022/23 campaign, making 38 appearances and contributing three goals and four assists as the Blades secured second place and automatic promotion, while Doyle's screamer against Blackburn sent United to the FA Cup semi-final.

Doyle's technical ability and composure on the ball make him an ideal fit for Davies' possession-based approach.

Doyle himself described his strengths in an interview with Sky Sports, saying: "I would say my best attributes are getting on the ball and trying to dictate the play from a deep position.

"Trying to find my attacking players through the lines is something I like to do most," he added, which perfectly aligns with Birmingham's ambitions to play attractive football in the second tier, like they did in the third.

For any club, numerous signings can see a side not firing on all cylinders from the get-go. However, alongside Cashin's message, Doyle's recent reveal is another statement of intent from the Blues, showing that they aren't prepared to rest on their laurels following promotion last term.

Kyogo Furuhashi, Demarai Gray and Cashin have all been huge statements from Blues, complementing the more grounded arrivals of Taylor Gardner-Hickman, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Kanya Fujimoto.

And if the club are to bring in Werder Bremen's Marvin Ducksch ahead of the new term, it is becoming further evident how quickly the club's ownership group plans to exit the division, this time through the upward route.

The most crucial factor now, alongside the quality of the side, is that everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet.

And with just over a week left until the start of the season, it is all smiles at St Andrew's, which is great news for Chris Davies.
