The transfer of the talented young Sheffield Wednesday winger Djeidi Gassama from Sheffield Wednesday to Rangers might not be a done deal yet.

It has been widely reported that the former PSG academy graduate Gassama was set to leave Hillsborough for Ibrox, but new reports are now casting doubt over this.

Sheffield Wednesday have endured a tumultuous summer, with unpaid wages, confusion over their managerial situation, and ownership issues leaving the club in a highly precarious position.

But recent reports have indicated that a takeover of the club could be coming in the next few weeks and rumours of the return of head coach Danny Rohl have been more positive stories, following a summer of misery for Wednesday fans.

"There might be some doubt" over Gassama sale to Rangers

Journalist Rob Staton of BBC Sheffield has reported on X that there are reasons to believe that the sale of Gassama to Rangers isn't quite the done deal which it has been widely reported to be elsewhere. Staton reports that he's "Hearing there might be some doubt about Djeidi Gassama’s move to Rangers" and that this transfer might be "One to keep an eye on".

Other news outlets are certainly treating the sale as already having been completed.

Earlier on the same morning as Staton's note of caution, the Daily Record ran an article in which they claimed that Gassama "poses in Rangers colours" and that "the leaked snap of Gassama in the club's new red Umbro training top is a blow to Wednesday punters who held out hope that a returning Danny Rohl could tempt the wide man into extending his stay at Hillsborough."

Takeover speculation could be fuelling rumours of the Gassama sale collapse

The Daily Record's mention of the return of Danny Rohl has been one of the biggest surprises of the summer in the Championship, so far. A complete breakdown in the relationship between Rohl and club owner Dejphon Chansiri was the reason for his absence, but attempts to go elsewhere ran into brick walls, and it was then reported that he was prepared to return to the club, although even this was thrown into confusion by further rumours that a number of the players might not want him back.

This in turn has fuelled speculation that a takeover of the club could be imminent. Sheffield Wednesday already been subject to takeover bids which have been rejected, but Chansiri's position remains untenable, and with the club's financial problems having been so acute, it's widely believed that a takeover is the only thing that could now save Wednesday from - at the very least - a disastrous 2025-26 season.

Gassama is a highly talented young player, and his departure from Sheffield Wednesday would be a big blow to the club. The winger has made 78 League appearances for the club and scored ten goals since his 2023 transfer from PSG, who he joined after developing in the academy at Brest.

Given the high esteem in which Gassama is held, it was certainly not surprising that there was considerable interest in him this summer. But Wednesday fans reading between the lines can be forgiven hoping that rumours that he could be staying could be a canary in the coalmine for more good news to come.
