Frank Lampard has been speaking to the media for the first time since being announced as Chelsea’s caretaker manager.

It was confirmed on Thursday that the former midfielder was returning for a second time as Blues boss, this time on a deal until the end of the season.

Here are some of his best quotes.

On returning

“It was a pretty easy decision for me. This is my club.

“The role and the explanation of my role speaks for itself, and the period I’m here. I’m not getting anywhere ahead of myself.

“This is my club. I’m proud to manage this club and I look forward to the opportunity. I’m ready to put my work into this challenge, I have a clear idea of what I want to do in this period.”

On the current squad

“I was at the game on Tuesday night, I know there’s a lot of talent in this squad. I’m excited to work with that talent and help them.

“Modern day football has big squads, I understand Chelsea are at the top end of that. Part of the job is to manage that situation and make every player feel included.”

On Mason Mount’s future

“Mason has always been a fantastic player for me. It’s an absolute pleasure to watch him, and other players like Reece James, Tammy Abraham and Tomori to go on and be huge players here or elsewhere.

“I know what I get from Mason. I just want to see him perform on the pitch. We have a good relationship, I look forward to speaking to him more.”

On this season’s targets

To install the highest level of confidence I can with the group. In terms of targets, we want to win as many games as we can. It’s the simplest answer you’re going to get.

“Every game is hard, but we have to have a belief in the players in this squad. We want to win games.”

On his message to the fans

“I’m very thankful for the ones that are delighted. If there are some that aren’t, they can know I’ll work my utmost to give them a team they’re proud of.

“I don’t think I need to speak too much about my relationship with the Chelsea fans. From the moment I joined this club many years ago, they’ve been a huge support to me. I’m forever thankful for that.”

On Chelsea’s struggles

“I don’t think football can surprise you. It’s such a competitive league. Not my position to comment on how and why the club is where it is now… my position to move us into a more positive place.

“There’s been change, transition in the squad. A lot of talent in the squad. Those things take a bit of time, everyone will try and work in the right direction.

“If I can play my part in that, then great.”

On getting back into Europe

“It’s really important but we’re in this situation now where we’d all love to get there but the reality is we have to win games to give ourselves a fighting chance.

“I don’t want to go there at this point. Whatever challenges are there this season, I’m here to see what is the maximum impact I can have.”
