Liverpool’s summer, while clouded by grief following the tragic death of Diogo Jota and his brother, continues to be one of intent and transition. The 3-1 win over Preston North End was as much about emotional recovery as it was about tactical preparation, but the next phase of Arne Slot’s pre-season planning could see further additions to a squad already reshaped in key areas.
Among the names being linked with a possible move to Merseyside is Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku. According to L’ÉQUIPE, Liverpool are monitoring his situation as Chelsea prepare for what could be another summer of turnover.
Nkunku, who joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in 2023 for £52 million, is reportedly valued at £35 million and is attracting interest from Manchester United and Bayern Munich alongside Liverpool. The 27-year-old’s time in England has been disrupted by injury and inconsistency, starting only nine of his 27 appearances.

Liverpool’s attacking depth is in flux. With questions surrounding the futures of Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott, and the departures of key squad figures like Alexander-Arnold, Kelleher and Quansah already confirmed, Slot’s attacking blueprint for the season ahead is still forming.

Nkunku could be a fit in theory. Despite limited Premier League exposure, he impressed in Europe, scoring five goals and providing three assists during Chelsea’s successful Conference League campaign. However, he does not appear to feature prominently in Enzo Maresca’s plans going forward.
Nkunku was part of the Chelsea squad that lifted the Club World Cup in the United States, beating PSG 3-0, but his limited domestic impact has prompted speculation over his future. Reports suggest the player is open to a move.
With a reported valuation of £35 million, Nkunku presents a relatively affordable option in a difficult market. His ability to operate as a second striker, wide forward or advanced midfielder would offer tactical variety for Slot, who is likely to seek flexibility in his attacking options given the potential outgoings.

For now, Liverpool’s interest remains exploratory. But with the club still active and ambitious in the transfer window, this is one to watch as the tour of Asia begins and the squad evolves further.
Christopher Nkunku might have been a compelling option two years ago, but now? There are legitimate questions to ask.
The Frenchman’s Chelsea stint has been a catalogue of missed opportunities. Injuries played a role, yes, but so did inconsistency. A total of nine starts in all competitions for a player signed at £52 million feels far removed from what Liverpool supporters have come to expect from marquee targets.
There’s also the issue of fit. Liverpool’s current rebuild needs certainty, not reclamation projects. Nkunku’s versatility is attractive on paper, but he hasn’t proven himself as a reliable force in English football. And if Chelsea, a club known for backing expensive investments, are already open to letting him go, that should set alarm bells ringing.
Yes, £35 million in today’s market seems a modest figure, but it still represents a significant gamble. Supporters will want to know whether this is opportunism or desperation. After all, if players like Nunez or Diaz are heading out, surely the club should be aiming higher, not lower.
A talented player? Absolutely. But one that makes sense for Liverpool right now? Jury’s out.
