Liverpool’s incredible title win under Arne Slot has rightly turned heads across Europe. What began as a transitional season ended with Premier League silverware in the Dutchman’s debut campaign. But success never stands still, and the machine at Anfield is already in motion to maintain momentum. According to Football Insider, that process could include a familiar face returning to Merseyside: Dirk Kuyt.
In light of reports suggesting that John Heitinga is “likely” to leave Anfield after just one season, potentially to become Ajax’s head coach, Liverpool are said to be “lining up a move” to bring Kuyt back into the fold in a coaching capacity.
Since retiring in 2018, Kuyt has built a coaching résumé with both promise and pitfalls. He began modestly, serving as an assistant at Quick Boys and managing Feyenoord’s U19s, before stepping up to full managerial roles at ADO Den Haag and Beerschot.
At Beerschot, his most recent club, Kuyt earned just 1.02 points per game over 53 matches. His side finished bottom of the Belgian Pro League relegation round. On paper, those numbers are far from spectacular. Yet Football Insider notes that Kuyt “is said to have impressed,” which may refer more to his character, work ethic, and connection to Liverpool than strictly his win rate.
Kuyt is no stranger to Anfield. He made 285 appearances for Liverpool, more than for any other club, and was involved in 111 goals, including a famous hat-trick against Manchester United. His tireless work rate, adaptability, and commitment to the shirt made him a cult favourite.
Slot, who has mostly retained the staff brought in during Klopp’s reign, could see Kuyt as an ideal figure to bridge the past with the present. His connection with the club’s values, history, and culture offers intangibles that go beyond tactical nous. In today’s modern game, those qualities can be critical in fostering unity within a squad chasing back-to-back titles.

It is worth noting that Kuyt’s potential appointment is not guaranteed. As per Football Insider, Liverpool are “lining up” the move, not confirming it. Much will depend on Heitinga’s decision, Ajax’s stance, and whether Kuyt’s departure from Beerschot can be finalised smoothly.
If it materialises, Kuyt’s return would be a ‘popular move’ according to the source, one that resonates with fans who still remember his relentless performances and knack for turning up in big games. And in a coaching role, particularly under the guidance of Slot, there’s every chance he can rediscover the magic he once brought to the pitch – this time from the sidelines.
For many of us, Dirk Kuyt isn’t just another ex-player. He’s a symbol of a certain era at Liverpool – one defined by graft, heart, and a refusal to give up. Seeing him linked with a coaching return, particularly after a stunning title win, hits the right emotional notes.
This isn’t about trophies won as a manager. It’s about a man who gets the club. Kuyt knows what it means to put on that red shirt. He knows what it means to fight through adversity and rise in the big moments. He’s exactly the sort of figure who could help Slot maintain high standards without disrupting the chemistry that led to the Premier League crown.
Arne Slot has already shown he has the tactical brain to thrive in England. But building a dynasty requires more – it takes character and continuity. Kuyt could offer both. If Heitinga does leave, there would be worse replacements than a man who once dragged this club forward with sheer will and passion.
It’s also a powerful signal to the squad. Bring in people who embody the values of Liverpool, and the culture remains intact. A legend in the dressing room, no matter his current win ratio, can inspire future legends on the pitch.
If this move goes through, it’s not just nostalgia – it’s good planning.
