It’s a new tournament and a new season (sort of) but the same old questions keep coming back for Enzo Maresca.

His first press conference of the Club World Cup covered some familiar topics, such as “what’s up with your goalkeeping situation?”

A flurry of bids for Mike Maignan last week revealed to everyone that the club aren’t quite as happy with their current options as they’d have you believe – although in his answer Maresca was right back to pretending they were.

“The situation with the goalkeepers, for me is quite simple and quite easy,” the Italian coach said.

“Robert [Sanchez] is the number one. Then we have Filip [Jorgensen] who is the number two. [Mike] Penders has joined us, we’re going to see in the next weeks, we have time to analyse him and judge him. Then we’re going to take a final decision. For Maignan and the other players who are not with us, they are with other clubs, it’s not worth talking about them.”

Chelsea probably not done in Maignan chase, despite Maresca’s words

Well we’re not convinced, and we’re not sure any will be. The Maignan deal looked to collapse because Milan were trying to use the arrival of this tournament to squeeze more money out of us.

If we go back to the table once it’s over, they won’t have that leverage anymore, and they will be feeling the pressure of losing a major player for free in a year’s time.

Unless one of the three already on the books excels beyond belief in the USA, we’d strongly suspect further interest in Maignan and perhaps other options in July.
