Olivia Smith shot over angle of bar and post for Liverpool but Arsenal took a 20th-minute lead through Alessia Russo, after Gemma Bonner could not get any distance on her clearance off the line.

Five minutes later and Bonner brought down Russo in the box but Mariona Caldentey’s penalty came back off the post.

Arsenal’s Katie McCabe headed the ball against her own post, Gunners keeper Daphne van Domselaar got away with playing the ball straight against Smith.

The win lifted Arsenal to within one point of second-placed Manchester City.
