Fiorentina wingback Robin Gosens feels that his old side Inter Milan are “the team to beat” in the Serie A title race.
The German spoke to TNT Sports, via FCInterNews. He also looked back on his season and a half with the Nerazzurri.
Gosens comes face to face with his former team Inter this evening.
The German spent a season and a half with the Nerazzurri. He had joined from Atalanta during the January transfer window of 2022.
But despite having undoubtedly been one of the outstanding wingbacks in Serie A if not all of Europe in Bergamo, Gosens never quite made the desired impact at Inter.
In his first few months, Gosens was nothing more than a backup for Ivan Perisic.
And in the German’s first full season at the Nerazzurri, he found more competition than he expected. Federico Dimarco emerged as a regular starter.
Gosens joined Union Berlin from Inter in the summer of 2023.
However, this move never quite worked out. Union endured a disastrous season, and Gosens found his form slipping further.
But this past summer, the 30-year-old made the return to Serie A. He joined Fiorentina.
And Gosens has been showing his form from his Atalanta days. Meanwhile, Fiorentina as a whole have been flying high, currently level with Inter at the top of the table.
The Nerazzurri face La Viola this evening.
Gosens called it “a great match to see where we’re at.”
“Inter are the most complete team in Serie A,” the German argued.
“They’ve played together. They have the same coach as ever. They’ve brought in two or three very high-level players.”
“For me they remain the favourites for the title,” Gosens said of Inter.
“Particularly because I’ve played with most of the guys there, and I know how good they are.”
“At the moment – and it’s still early in the season – they’re the team to beat,” Gosens said of his old team.
And Gosens also looked back on his time at Inter. “Even though a lot of people say that year and a half weren’t a positive experience, I honestly don’t agree.”
“Of course, everyone expected, above all, that I’d play more. But sometimes things just don’t happen in football.”
“Nobody expected Dimarco would have a season like he did at the time,” Gosens continued.
“He exploded. He was doing very well, and still is.”
“I tried to give my best and make the difference,” Gosens said. “Obviously, that was Inter’s intention when they spent €28 million on me, for me to be the starting left-wingback for the next several years.”
“Nobody expected Dimarco would have the kind of season he did,” the Fiorentina wingback reiterated.
“But thinking back on that period, I only have positive feelings.”
“Because I played with a lot of top players,” Gosens said. “I won some trophies, we reached the Champions League final.”
“For a year and a half the San Siro was my home,” the 30-year-old went on. “One of the most beautiful stadiums in the world.”
“So I couldn’t possibly look back on it negatively. Obviously I would’ve liked more minutes, but I’m very proud to have played for that fantastic team.”
