Everton thought that they had been given a golden chance to take an early Merseyside derby lead, only for VAR to chalk off the decision.

In a frantic opening to the game between two old rivals, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was put through, seemingly beating the Liverpool defence.

Taking the ball round Alisson, he was felled by the Brazilian and the referee pointed to the spot, handing the Liverpool No.1 a yellow card in the process.

Fortunately (for Klopp and co), VAR came to the rescue, with replays showing that the Everton striker had just gone too early and been caught out by Liverpool’s backline.

Though an unpopular decision at Goodison Park, the whole of the red half of Liverpool will be very grateful to still be on level terms.
