FC Porto have made it clear that they highly value Nico Gonzalez and are determined to retain control over as much of his rights as possible, giving Barcelona a possible financial blow.

Recent reports from Mundo Deportivo highlight the situation, revealing that the Portuguese club has no intention of selling the midfielder unless they are paid his release clause, which is set at €60 million.

There has been growing interest from top clubs, particularly Manchester City, who are reportedly keen on signing Nico.

The player, who had previously been part of Barcelona’s youth setup, still has a 40% sell-on clause attached to any future transfer.

This means that Barcelona stands to receive 40% of any profit Porto makes from selling Nico, above the €8.4 million the Portuguese club initially invested in him.

How much can Barcelona earn?

To break this down, Porto paid Barcelona €8.4 million for Nico, and the Catalan club is entitled to 40% of any future sale profits.

For example, if Porto were to sell Nico for €60 million, they would need to share €51.6 million with Barcelona, meaning that Barcelona would receive €20.6 million.

Additionally, Porto have an option to buy an extra 20% of the capital gains from the deal, potentially reducing the amount Barcelona would receive.

What is that agreement?

According to an agreement signed in July 2023, Porto can acquire this 20% for €6 million, payable over the next two years, and if this happens, Barcelona’s share would drop to €16.32 million instead of €20.6 million.

Porto’s stance remains firm—they will not entertain offers for Nico unless they are offered his full release clause or they gain full control over the player’s rights.

On the other hand, Barcelona also have the option to bring Nico back for €30 million, should they choose to activate this clause. However, Porto are confident that they will be able to retain the player, at least for the time being.
