Chelsea had the opportunity to sell Mykhailo Mudryk this summer but they said no as they still believe in his potential according to Fabrizio Romano.

Mudryk has struggled to find any sort of consistency with his performances following his arrival at Stamford Bridge in January 2023.

There was an improvement last season under Mauricio Pochettino, but the Ukrainian really needs to push on this campaign under Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea had the opportunity to sell Mudryk

With the arrrival of Pedro Neto, Joao Felix and Jadon Sancho this summer there’s increased competition in the wide areas and Mudryk has struggled for game time in the league so far.

It appears his opportunities are going to come in the cup competitions and he put in an improved showing against Barrow on Tuesday evening as he unselfishly set up Pedro Neto for his first Chelsea goal.

With the arrival of Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez in 2025 it very much feels like Mudryk’s performances this season will determine whether he’s still at the club beyond next summer.

However, Romano has provided an interesting update on the 23-year-old and revealed the Blues had the opportunity to sell him this summer but turned the chance down.

“Chelsea had the opportunity to sell Mudryk this summer, German club offered a concrete possibility, but Chelsea said no, they keep trusting his potential, but they want to see a development, also with the coaching staff. Mudryk’s performances this season will be important for his future,” he told his YouTube channel.

Mudryk will likely find himself back on the bench against Brighton this weekend and will be hoping to be given an opportunity having been an unused substitute in the last two league games.

Maresca sees him competing with Jadon Sancho for a spot on the left wing and right now the England international is clearly well ahead of him in the pecking order.

It’s frustrating because Mudryk has all the tools to be a top player it’s just not happened for him yet and he’s the sort of player that if he leaves Chelsea he will go and thrive elsewhere.
