Renato Veiga wants to leave Chelsea six months after joining because he wants regular minutes at centre back according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues were expected to be quiet in January, but it now looks like they are going to be busier than they expected, with it looking like a new centre back could come in given injuries to Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana.

Chelsea also have a number of players they are looking to move on with both Ben Chilwell and Carney Chukwuemeka told they can leave the club, whilst Cesare Casadei is expected to return to Italy.

Veiga wants regular centre back minutes

One player that wasn’t expected to leave this month was Veiga, who only joined in the summer for £12m from Swiss side FC Basel.

The 21-year-old was signed as a utility player, but mainly as back up for Marc Cucurella at left back, although he has featured at centre back and in midfield.

Veiga has become a full Portugal international since joining Chelsea, where he’s predominantly been used as a central defender by Roberto Martinez.

However, in surprising news Veiga has verbally agreed to join Borussia Dortmund, with the German outfit now needing to find an agreement with Chelsea, who are said to value the player at £20m.

Romano has provided detail on why Veiga wants to leave and it’s to do with not getting enough minutes in his preferred position.

He took to X.com and said:

“Chelsea are currently only opening the doors to Renato Veiga’s exit on a permanent deal. He’s pushing for new chapter to play centre back on regular basis.

“Borussia Dortmund agreed with Veiga; Chelsea also received approaches from top clubs in Italy, France and PL sides.”

It’s strange given Veiga played 90 minutes against Morecambe on Saturday, and it’s unlikely Chelsea would have told him he would be getting regular centre back minutes when he signed.

It now means if Chelsea agree to let Veiga go the club need to go into the transfer market and bring in a left back as if anything happens to Marc Cucurella there would be a problem.
